How to Measure Your Feet for a Better Shoe Fit

by Marc Jovelle Editorial on Aug 06, 2026
Measuring feet at home for a better shoe fit

A comfortable shoe starts with a useful measurement. Brand labels and your usual size are helpful references, but the length and width of your feet provide a better starting point—especially when you are comparing unfamiliar styles.

What you need

  • Two sheets of paper larger than your feet
  • A pencil held upright
  • A ruler or measuring tape
  • The socks you expect to wear with the shoes

Measure at the right time

Feet can expand slightly through the day, so measure in the late afternoon or evening. Stand naturally and distribute your weight evenly. If possible, ask someone to trace your feet while you remain upright.

Step-by-step measurement

  1. Place the paper on a hard, level floor with one edge against a wall.
  2. Put on the socks you plan to wear and stand with your heel lightly touching the wall.
  3. Mark the end of your longest toe. It is not always the big toe.
  4. Measure from the wall edge to the toe mark in inches and centimeters.
  5. Measure the widest part of the forefoot from side to side.
  6. Repeat the process for your other foot.

Always fit the larger foot

Small differences between feet are common. Use the longer measurement when selecting a size, then check how the shoe holds the smaller foot. Lacing, straps, insoles, and sock thickness can fine-tune the fit.

Length is only part of fit

Two shoes with the same stated size can feel different because of toe shape, width, instep volume, lining, and construction. A pointed toe usually needs more front space than a rounded toe. Waterproof linings and insulated materials can also make the interior feel closer.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Measuring while seated instead of standing
  • Holding the pencil at an angle
  • Measuring only one foot
  • Using a soft rug instead of a hard floor
  • Forgetting the socks intended for the shoe

Before ordering

Compare your measurement with the size information on the specific product page. If you fall between sizes, consider the shoe’s construction and your preferred fit. For a roomy boot worn with thick socks, the larger option may work better. For an adjustable sandal, the smaller option may still provide enough space.

When the shoes arrive, try them indoors on a clean surface. Your toes should move naturally, your heel should feel secure, and there should be no sharp pressure across the widest part of the foot.
